Real history. A made-up life.

Based on real historical data, approximated. For fun, not financial advice.

Source access does not verify every value. Approximate and authored game assumptions are identified below.

S&P 500 total returns

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: false

1950–2025 published annual returns including dividends, rounded to two decimals. Saved in raw/verified-extract.json; generated values match this extract. Pre-1957 history is a backfilled index, not a then-available retail index fund. NYU page accessed successfully; January 2026 update.

3-month Treasury bill rate

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: false

1950–2025 arithmetic mean of 12 monthly rates, rounded to four decimals. Saved extract and calculations checked. The use as Savings/CD returns is an approx: true product proxy, not measured bank CD yields or an exact compounded investment return.

CPI-U inflation

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

BLS all-items, US city average, not seasonally adjusted. Annual-average index change, rounded to four decimals. 1950–2024 rows have approx: false. The saved 2025 extract has January–September only: fallback 2.7%, approx: true. This is an incomplete local extract, not a claim that full-year data are unavailable today.

National house price changes

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

FHFA all-transactions HPI: Q4/Q4 percentage changes for 1976–2025, approx: false in annual rows. Before 1976, NYU real estate returns are an approx: true national proxy. Fractional equity, no mortgage or transaction-cost model; a simplified 2% annual carrying cost and rental living-cost adjustment are game rules, not measured local taxes or rents.

State house price changes

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: false

All 50 states, 1976–2025, Q4/Q4 changes rounded to four decimals. Source series pattern {state}STHPI; each exact URL and quarterly observations are saved in raw/state-hpi.json. California and national source pages re-accessed; all 2,500 derived changes checked against the saved extract, not independently re-downloaded. Earlier state years use the approximate national proxy.

Bitcoin annual returns

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

2013–2025 hand-entered rounded estimates from the previous implementation; original row provenance is unavailable. Coinbase/FRED is a primary reference for later years, NOT verification of these values or coverage of 2013. Exchange and year-end cutoff differences remain unverified. Every BTC row is approx: true; values must not be presented as exact history.

Annual US births

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: false

CDC NCHS e6fc-ccez, 1950–2005 annual counts, used directly as sampling weights. Dataset API accessed; generated counts checked against saved extract. Older counts are published rounded values; historical geographic coverage differs before 1960. Birth-year weights do not describe the current US population.

State birth-share proxy

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

Rounded population anchors for 1950, 1980 and 2000, linearly interpolated and normalized. 2001–2005 holds 2000 values. Not verified state natality shares. Modern 50-state geography includes Alaska/Hawaii before statehood and excludes DC and other territories. Census reference accessed; individual anchors remain approximate.

Family income tiers and gifts

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

Census household quintiles are conceptual context only. Five equal 20% tiers, allowance multipliers and inheritance amounts are authored game assumptions, not measured newborn-household probabilities or sourced wealth amounts. Reference accessed; model reviewed locally.

Common given names by decade

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

SSA decade lists (replace 1950 with 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000). Eight hand-selected names per historical sex category, sampled uniformly rather than by recorded frequencies. 1950s reference accessed; full decade tables were not re-extracted. Name category does not change opportunities.

Immediate college enrollment

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

NCES Digest table 302.10 / historical table 186 is the intended reference for recent high-school completers, not all teenagers. Sparse 1960–2023 anchors are interpolated and endpoints held. Current retrieval timed out: retained values remain unverified approximations. Family adjustment and the offered choices are game rules.

Median age at first marriage

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

Census MS-2 is the reference; landing page accessed, workbook values not re-extracted. Sparse male/female 1950–2024 anchors are interpolated with endpoint holding. Story timing and marriage outcomes are game approximations, not demographic forecasts.

Cohort longevity model

Source reference · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

SSA Actuarial Study 120 (2005) explains cohort versus period tables; reference accessed. The game anchors 79/81/83/84 for birth years 1950/1970/1990/2005 are authored assumptions, NOT extracted cohort life expectancy. The game applies random variation, health adjustments and a minimum age of 60; it does not model full population mortality.

Student debt model

Source: authored game model · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

Primary source is this authored game model, reviewed locally on the access date. Era anchors $14k/$20k/$34k/$45k and tier multipliers are assumed debt in 2025 dollars, not published tuition, measured graduate debt or a verified historical series.

Real wage trend

Source: authored game model · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

Primary source is this authored game model, reviewed locally on the access date. Wage-index anchors 0.65/0.8/0.9/1 for 1950/1970/1990/2025 are assumptions, not a BLS wage series. Salaries and living costs in life/economy.ts are also simplified game parameters.

Future means and volatility

Source: authored game model · accessed / reviewed 2026-10-14 · approx: true

Derived game model, reviewed locally. Deposit, CPI, stock and housing sample means and sample SDs use 1996–2025 historical rows. Future Bitcoin instead uses an authored mature-market scenario (8% arithmetic mean, 65 percentage-point SD, clipped to -85%/+200%), not an indefinite replay of early adoption. Historical Bitcoin rows are unchanged. State housing uses the corresponding state window. Independent seeded normal draws are clipped to explicit game bounds. All years after 2025 are future (simulated), not forecasts; historical correlations and fat tails are not modeled.

What do TOP and BOTTOM mean?

The rounded share of 240 simulated lives born in your year with net worth at least yours, including ties, with a minimum of 1%. Ranks 1–50 display TOP N%; ranks 51–100 display BOTTOM (101 − N)%. For example, rank 99 displays BOTTOM 2%. It does not rank real Americans.
